Members of the Canadian Armed Forces descended from a helicopter on Sunday afternoon at The Forks, carrying the prestigious Grey Cup. This event marked the commencement of Grey Cup week, which is renowned as the CFL’s most significant annual celebration. The week will culminate with the league’s championship game on November 16 at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.

Kristin Orvis, who attended the event and will be attending the Grey Cup game, described it as a grand celebration and a massive party. The festivities are expected to draw attendees from all over Canada, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

The upcoming championship game at Princess Auto Stadium is already sold out, with thousands of fans anticipated to fill the stadium. In addition to the main game, various events are scheduled in downtown Winnipeg as part of the Grey Cup Festival, offering both free and ticketed activities for attendees.

According to a provincial spokesperson, the economic impact of the Grey Cup and associated events is estimated to exceed $90 million, including a projected $8.2 million in provincial tax revenues.

During a news conference on Sunday, Nellie Kennedy, the province’s Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism, emphasized that hosting the Grey Cup is not just a celebration but also a significant economic driver. The event is expected to boost local businesses, attract visitors, and showcase Manitoba on a national scale.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for businesses to capitalize on the increased foot traffic during the week. The excitement surrounding the Grey Cup is seen as an opportunity for businesses like Devil May Care, a local brewery and taproom near “Grey Cup HQ,” to attract more customers and showcase their offerings.

Colin Koop, the general manager and owner of Devil May Care, expressed optimism about the event’s potential to draw large crowds to downtown Winnipeg and promote local businesses. With an influx of visitors expected from across Canada, businesses like Devil May Care hope to capitalize on the surge in tourism.

The Manitoba Hotel Association president and CEO, Michael Juce, indicated that while there is still hotel availability in the city, football fans are encouraged to book accommodations promptly. With over 7,000 rentable rooms in Winnipeg, the event is anticipated to bring a significant boost to the local hospitality sector.

Despite the absence of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in this year’s championship game, fans like Orvis remain enthusiastic about participating in the festivities. Longtime Grey Cup attendees, Daniel and Cheryl Graham, are also excited about the social aspect of the event and the warm hospitality that Manitoba is known for.

Overall, the Grey Cup week in Winnipeg is expected to be a vibrant celebration that not only entertains sports fans but also provides an economic stimulus to the city and province.
