Australian beef is available in Canadian stores at lower prices compared to local beef, sparking concerns among producers while pleasing budget-conscious consumers. Tyler Fulton, president of the Canadian Cattle Association, highlighted the long-standing presence of Australian beef in the market, particularly in steak cuts. Factors contributing to the pricing disparity were discussed by Fulton, emphasizing the leaner quality of Australian beef due to its grass-based production model.

The accessibility of Australian beef in Canada increased following the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in 2018. Fulton acknowledged the benefits of the agreement for Canada in terms of market access to countries like Japan and Vietnam. Despite the temporary need for imported beef, Fulton assured that Canadian producers maintain confidence in the quality standards of Australian beef.

Shoppers at Loblaws-owned stores in Regina shared their perspectives on the affordability of beef, with one consumer mentioning dietary adjustments due to high beef prices. Some consumers opt for locally sourced beef to support sustainability, while others prioritize cost over origin. Loblaws emphasized its commitment to both Canadian producers and providing customers with diverse choices at competitive prices.

In response to market dynamics, the Canadian Cattle Association expressed optimism about domestic growth opportunities for producers. Fulton highlighted recent growth in the Canadian beef sector and anticipated further expansion due to favorable conditions. The association remains focused on catering to the domestic consumer market while exploring international prospects.
