A tumultuous week culminated in a thrilling outcome for Canadian defender Nikola Markovic as he was selected first overall by D.C. United in the MLS SuperDraft. Following a tough loss in the College Cup championship game, Markovic expressed his elation at being chosen by the club. The 21-year-old from Gatineau, Que., becomes only the second Canadian, after Cyle Larin, to be the top pick in the MLS draft.

D.C. United’s managing director of soccer operations, Erkut Sogut, praised Markovic for his skills both on and off the field, highlighting his winning mentality and warrior-like playing style. Sogut believes that Markovic will be able to make an immediate impact on the team.

Markovic, who was named the ACC defensive player of the year, signed a Generation Adidas contract with the league, making him an attractive prospect for D.C. United. FC Dallas followed in the draft, selecting forwards Ricky Louis and Nicholas Simmonds as the second and third picks, respectively.

Other notable selections in the draft included Canadian fullback Nikos Clarke-Tosczak going to Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps choosing midfielder Zach Ramsey from the University of Washington. Toronto FC and CF Montreal did not have first-round picks in the draft.

Markovic, who had a successful collegiate career at North Carolina State, is known for his defensive prowess and ability to contribute offensively. His standout performances have earned him accolades and recognition within the soccer community, making him a promising prospect for D.C. United.
