Laurence Fournier Beaudry revealed her acquisition of French citizenship on the weekend, allowing the 33-year-old Canadian native to potentially participate for France at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics with her partner Guillaume Cizeron.
Earlier in the year, Olympic ice dance champion Cizeron had declared his partnership with Fournier Beaudry after her previous partner Nikolaj Sorensen was handed a six-year suspension for “sexual maltreatment.”
In an Instagram post, Fournier Beaudry expressed her delight at the official transition to French citizenship, having previously represented Denmark, and thanked her supporters for their unwavering companionship throughout her journey.
It is not uncommon for skaters in ice dance and pairs figure skating to switch nationalities due to the limited availability of suitable partners.
Cizeron, aged 30, and Gabriella Papadakis, who secured the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and clinched five world titles, retired in December 2024. However, Cizeron made a comeback alongside Fournier Beaudry, winning the Grand Prix de France last month.
