CBC Music’s weekly feature, “Songs you need to hear,” showcases hot new Canadian tracks. This week’s edition shines a spotlight on fresh singles from Juno nominees and performers, in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 Juno Awards on March 29.

Alessia Cara’s jazzy reimagining of her track “Shapeshifter,” featuring Nelly Furtado, kicks off with luscious horns and soulful vibes. This rendition, part of Cara’s new album “Love and Lack Thereof,” brings a fresh take on her music over the past decade. Furtado’s poignant vocals add depth to the narrative of fleeting love in the song. The release coincides with Cara’s performance at the Juno Awards, where she will pay tribute to Furtado’s induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Allison Russell’s latest offering, “Rainbows,” is a breath of fresh air in challenging times. The Grammy-winning artist’s enchanting EP includes this title track, celebrating magic and optimism. Russell’s empowering vocals convey a message of reconnecting with inner magic and spreading positivity. The release also features covers of Sarah McLachlan’s songs, setting the stage for a special performance at the Juno Awards.

Bbno$ delves into introspective indie pop with his introspective single “Why Am I Like This,” shedding light on personal struggles and self-reflection. This departure from his usual pop-rap style showcases a more vulnerable side of the artist. With a shift in his musical direction evident in this release and his previous single “Diamonds Are Forever,” Bbno$ is a contender for multiple awards at this year’s Junos.

Country artist Cameron Whitcomb gears up for his Juno debut with the release of the heartfelt track “You and Me.” The song captures a tender moment of yearning and escapism, as Whitcomb’s powerful vocals soar over a backdrop of gentle instrumentation. With five nominations and a promising new sound, Whitcomb is set to make waves at the upcoming Juno Awards.
