Canada’s Steven Dubois secured the gold medal in the 500 meters on Saturday at the world short track speed skating championships. Dubois had previously clinched the same title at the Milano-Cortina Olympic Games and successfully defended his world championship in this event.
Despite battling a cold during the week, the 28-year-old skater from Terrebonne, Quebec, showed his dominance at the Maurice-Richard Arena on Saturday. He led from start to finish in his heats in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately in the final race.
Dutch skater Jens van ‘t Wout claimed the silver medal, while Turkey’s Furkan Akar secured the bronze.
In a separate turn of events, Montreal’s William Dandjinou experienced a crash while comfortably leading his semifinal heat but managed to win the B final. Maxime Laoun, the other Canadian contender, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The Canadian skaters missed the podium in the 1,500 meters earlier on Saturday. Dandjinou and Félix Roussel were initially in contention during the race, with Britain’s Niall Treacy and Australia’s Brendan Corey also in the top positions. However, Dandjinou crashed while leading with just under three laps remaining, and Roussel lost his rhythm in the final lap after contact with Corey, who was subsequently penalized.
South Korea’s Rim Jong-un claimed the gold, with Italy’s Thomas Nadalini taking silver and Belgium’s Stijn Desmet securing the bronze.
Courtney Sarault, who had a successful run in Milan with four medals, failed to reach the A final in the 1,000 meters women’s event. In the women’s 3,000 relay final, the Canadian team, consisting of Florence Brunelle, Kim Boutin, Danaé Blais, and Sarault, finished in fourth place after Sarault fell with less than two laps remaining. The Netherlands clinched the top spot, followed by Italy and China in the relay race.
