Canadian short track speed skater, Steven Dubois, took a bold approach in the men’s 500-metre final at the Winter Olympics in Milan. Opting for a different strategy, Dubois went all out from the start, relying on his superior start compared to his Dutch competitors, Melle van ‘t Wout and Jens. His plan was to lead the race, control the pace, and slow down when needed to secure victory. This risky move paid off as Dubois crossed the finish line first in 40.85 seconds, ahead of Melle (40.91) and Jens (41.92), earning his first individual gold medal of the Games following a silver in the mixed team relay.
Reflecting on his unconventional race strategy, Dubois expressed his determination to outperform the Dutch skaters, stating, “It’s not my usual style, but I had to do it to beat them. I believed in myself and aimed for that gold medal.” This victory marked Dubois’s second medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games, adding to the bronze he won in the 500-metre event four years ago in Beijing.
Despite facing challenges earlier in the competition, including a fall in the men’s 1,500-metre event and a collision in the 1,000-metre heat, Dubois showcased resilience and determination. The 28-year-old highlighted the emotional rollercoaster leading up to his gold medal win and expressed relief and satisfaction with his performance.
In addition to Dubois’s triumph, other Canadian athletes also shone at the Games. Will Dandjinou of Montreal faced setbacks but will have a chance to compete for a medal in the men’s 5,000-metre relay. Meanwhile, Courtney Sarault, from Moncton, secured her fourth medal at the Games, contributing to Canada’s overall success in short track speed skating.
The Canadian team’s performance in the women’s 3,000-metre relay was particularly notable, with Sarault, Danaé Blais, Kim Boutin, and Florence Brunelle clinching bronze. This achievement marked Sarault’s fourth medal at a single Winter Olympics, a historic feat for Canadian short track speed skating.
As the Games continue, Canadian athletes are showcasing their talent and determination on the global stage, bringing pride and success to their nation.
