Ahead of the upcoming 2027 Juno Awards, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) is making adjustments to various categories and implementing new eligibility criteria. Notably, in recording categories that accept singles, EPs, and albums, standalone singles will now be required, and cannot be singles from an album or EP.

To keep pace with the evolving Canadian music scene, changes are being made to the rap, electronic/dance, reggae/dancehall, and contemporary Christian/gospel music categories. Specifically, the rap album/EP of the year and rap single of the year will be replaced with melodic rap recording of the year and rap recording of the year. Similarly, electronic/dance single of the year and electronic/dance album/EP of the year will take the place of electronic album of the year and dance recording of the year.

In the reggae genre, the reggae recording of the year will be revamped to reggae/dancehall recording of the year. Additionally, contemporary Christian/gospel recording of the year will now encompass singles, EPs, and albums, replacing the previous contemporary Christian/gospel album of the year category.

Moving on to the classical and jazz categories, there are updates to the eligibility criteria. Jazz categories are transitioning from an 80 percent threshold to a 51 percent requirement for vocal and instrumental performance in 2027. This means that vocal jazz albums must consist of at least 51 percent vocal performance, while jazz (solo) and jazz (group) albums must have a minimum of 51 percent instrumental content. Furthermore, the featured vocalist for vocal jazz album of the year must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Changes in the classical categories include exemptions for classical album of the year (small ensemble) and classical album of the year (large ensemble) from the general restriction on compilation albums. Moreover, the requirement that works for classical composition of the year must have been composed within the past 50 years will be replaced with eligibility for original classical works by active Canadian composers.

Furthermore, the popular electronic music platform Beatport will be included in the list of eligible streaming platforms for the upcoming year. Detailed category descriptions and eligibility requirements for the 2027 Juno Awards can be found on the official Juno Awards submission guidelines page.
