A novel initiative, known as Chosen Grandma, is fostering intergenerational connections in Ottawa by pairing children with volunteer grandmothers. The program caters to youngsters who lack a grandmother figure in their lives or whose extended family resides far away. Volunteers undergo a thorough screening process, including interviews, references, and background checks, in addition to receiving training and constant support.

One heartwarming match is between Julie Hodgson, a retired 76-year-old with a background in the arts, and seven-year-old Hera Opemo. Hera’s two-year-old brother, Kwe, also participates in their shared activities. The trio has explored various cultural events and enjoyed simple pleasures like park visits and board games.

Destiny Kuchio, the children’s mother, who relocated from Kenya to Canada six months ago, emphasizes the importance of community support. She affectionately refers to Hodgson as “Grandma Julie,” highlighting the positive impact of the relationship on her children’s lives. Kuchio acknowledges the value of the program in providing additional care and companionship to Hera.

The driving forces behind Chosen Grandma, Peg Herbert and Marilyn Collette, recognized the mutual benefits of the program. Seniors find renewed purpose through interactions with the children, while parents appreciate the extra support and attention their kids receive. Monthly gatherings allow the volunteer grandmothers to bond, share experiences, and celebrate their connections with the children.

The impactful relationships formed through Chosen Grandma are palpable, as evidenced by the emotional farewells between little Kwe and Grandma Julie. The program’s success lies in its ability to create meaningful connections and provide essential support to families in need. To explore more about Chosen Grandma, visit the program’s website.
