Conservationists have observed an increase in the population of alewife and blueback herring in the St. Croix River following the removal of a hydroelectric dam two years ago. Located in the southwest New Brunswick town of St. Stephen, the St. Croix River, also known as the Skutik, once housed the Milltown Dam, which was dismantled through conservationist efforts.

According to Alexa Meyer from the Passamaquoddy Recognition Group, representing the Peskotomuhkati Nation, the river now feels revitalized and vibrant. Meyer estimates that there are over one million fish in the river, up from about 800,000 in the previous count. However, she believes that the ideal fish population should range between 50 to 100 million.

The removal of the Milltown Dam, which had stood for around 140 years, marks a significant cultural restoration for the Peskotomuhkati Nation. Families used to gather at the river for fishing, making it a crucial part of their heritage and traditions.

Matt Abbott, from the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, has been facilitating discussions at the river to delve into its history and the personal connections people have with it. Abbott emphasizes that the dam’s presence not only harmed the fish and the river’s ecosystem but also caused cultural and social disconnection among the community.

Residents like Peter Brown, who participated in storytelling sessions at the river, reminisce about their past experiences and express curiosity about the river’s natural state without the dam. While some individuals were initially concerned about losing a piece of heritage with the dam’s removal, Abbott aims to use storytelling sessions to rekindle a sense of belonging and connection to the river without the dam’s presence.

The ongoing efforts and community engagement aim to foster a renewed appreciation and protection of the St. Croix River, encouraging people to cherish and advocate for its well-being.
