A tragic incident occurred in Goa, India, as a fire engulfed a well-known nightclub, claiming the lives of 25 individuals, including tourists, as stated by the state’s chief minister on Sunday. The devastating blaze took place in Arpora village, located in North Goa, a popular party destination approximately 25 kilometers away from Panaji, the state capital.
Most of the casualties were identified as the club’s kitchen staff, with a few tourists also among the deceased. Additionally, six individuals sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition. The fire, triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, has been successfully extinguished, according to reports from the Press Trust of India news agency, citing local authorities.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the fire originated on the club’s first floor while nearly 100 tourists were present on the dance floor. Amid the chaos, some guests rushed to the kitchen on the lower level and became trapped along with the staff. Fatima Shaikh described the chaotic scene as flames erupted, forcing them to evacuate the club only to witness the entire structure ablaze.
Situated along the Arpora River backwaters, the nightclub’s limited entry and exit points posed challenges for firefighters, who had to park their vehicles around 400 meters away, causing delays in their response efforts. State Chief Minister Sawant highlighted that the club had violated fire safety regulations, leading to an official inquiry to ascertain the fire’s exact cause and hold responsible parties accountable.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured full government support, extending condolences to the families of the victims. Tragic incidents involving gas cylinder mishaps and electrical faults are not uncommon in India, emphasizing the critical need for stringent safety measures to prevent such disasters.
