A severe dust storm swept through Libya on Tuesday, causing low visibility and leading to the temporary closure of flights at Benghazi and Tripoli international airports. Libya, located in the Sahara Desert, is susceptible to dust storms, which are a common seasonal occurrence, typically peaking in April. These storms are created when strong winds from thunderstorms lift dry soil, carrying dust and sand long distances through the air.
Benghazi, the country’s second-largest city and the most heavily impacted by the storm, was engulfed in a thick orange haze. The surreal scenes, reminiscent of the movie “Dune,” depicted the city’s landscape during the storm. Photos captured during the event show individuals navigating through the dusty atmosphere, highlighting the intensity of the weather conditions in the region.
