A local organization is aiming to transform Edmonton into the most secure city in Canada by proposing solutions to address current deficiencies. The latest document released by the Downtown Revitalization Coalition underscores the persistent challenges of visible drug use and disorder in heavily frequented public areas, particularly in the downtown region.

According to the report, enhancing safety in the city can lead to longer stays, increased return visits, and deeper engagement in urban life. It highlights that transit stations, LRT platforms, and pedway corridors are frequent spots for disorder. A recent investigation by CBC revealed a significant increase in transit-related crimes over nine years in Edmonton, making the city’s transit system one of the riskiest in the country.

Councilor Anne Stevenson expressed optimism about Edmonton’s potential to become the safest downtown in Canada through collaborative efforts. While acknowledging limited control over police resource allocation, the city has bolstered its budget and recruited more peace officers.

Chairperson Cheryll Watson emphasized the need for a more integrated approach without necessarily incurring additional costs. The coalition is advocating for the amalgamation of transit and peace officers with the police force to enhance coordination and potentially save resources.

Watson suggested a review of programs like REACH, a crisis support team, to better address community needs promptly. The report also called for the establishment of a 24-hour stabilization and transfer facility to cater to individuals not requiring detention but needing medical, addiction, and social support services.

Although Edmonton Police initiated a similar service known as the Integrated Care Centre, it is currently limited to individuals detained for public intoxication offenses. Councilor Michael Janz praised the report’s content but pointed out that some recommendations, particularly those concerning addiction treatment, exceed the city’s jurisdiction and financial capabilities.

The coalition envisions provincial involvement through initiatives like Recovery Alberta to address broader societal challenges. A Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction spokesperson affirmed alignment between the report’s objectives and existing governmental efforts aimed at ensuring downtown Edmonton is a safe and welcoming environment for all.
