Taking time to enjoy small moments in everyday life can have significant benefits, as highlighted in a recent study by researchers at Dalhousie University, Brock University, and the University of Waterloo. The study, published in the journal Leisure Studies, explored how brief moments of leisure impact individuals.
Lead author Karen Gallant emphasized the importance of recognizing and embracing these moments of joy, relaxation, or peace. Through interviews with participants in Halifax, the researchers found that activities like watching the sunrise, playing with a Rubik’s cube, or savoring a cup of coffee provided stress relief and a positive outlook.
Unlike structured leisure activities, everyday moments of leisure can occur spontaneously anywhere, offering a sense of joy, connection to nature, or a break from daily routines. Participants shared how even a few minutes of engaging in pleasant experiences positively influenced their day.
Dr. Rebecca Boehm, a psychologist, emphasized the importance of slowing down and being present to reduce cognitive overload in today’s fast-paced world. She recommended taking “micro-moments” to focus on a single sensory input for relaxation.
While technology like cellphones can distract from these moments, they can also facilitate them, such as by capturing photos or playing quick games. Gallant suggested creating more leisure moments by carving out extra time in the day or being open to spontaneity during daily routines.
By embracing and seeking out these everyday moments of leisure, individuals can enhance their well-being and combat the constant demands of modern life.
