Owen Goodman has always felt a strong connection to Canada. Despite being born in England, his childhood in Alliston, Ont., played a crucial role in his journey to join the Canadian men’s national soccer team.

After receiving an email from his immigration lawyer in Toronto, 21-year-old Goodman was pleasantly surprised to learn that his childhood residency in Canada granted him Canadian citizenship. This realization marked a significant moment for him as he prepared for his first senior international window with the national team, culminating in a friendly match against Ecuador at BMO Field.

Goodman’s path to citizenship required a final step – taking the Oath of Citizenship in Canada. Despite his commitments to Huddersfield Town, where he is currently on loan from Crystal Palace, Goodman made the trip to Toronto, completed the oath, and swiftly returned to England to continue his training.

Reflecting on his journey, Goodman likened the experience to winning a final and expressed his excitement for what lies ahead. His dedication to representing Canada was evident when he declined an offer to play for Nigeria, emphasizing his fond memories and attachment to his Canadian upbringing.

As the competition heats up for the starting goalkeeper position in the upcoming World Cup, Goodman’s presence adds depth to the team. While he acknowledges the challenging road ahead, he remains positive, focusing on the opportunity to contribute to Canada’s soccer future.

With his sights set on reaching the English Premier League level, Goodman’s journey with the Canadian national team serves as a stepping stone towards his long-term aspirations. His commitment to his dreams and his unwavering determination exemplify his character and potential contribution to the team’s success.
