Epic Games has announced a significant reduction of over 1,000 jobs due to declining engagement with its popular game, Fortnite. The company plans to achieve cost savings of $500 million by cutting down on contracting and marketing expenses and eliminating certain positions, as stated by CEO Tim Sweeney in a recent communication to employees.

Despite the resilience of blockbuster titles like Fortnite during the COVID-19 pandemic, the overall industry growth has slowed down, impacting games that heavily rely on continuous updates to retain player interest. Sweeney acknowledged the challenges in maintaining Fortnite’s appeal and highlighted the current market conditions as the most challenging since the company’s establishment in 1991.

It is clarified that the job cuts are not related to artificial intelligence concerns within the industry. Epic Games had previously increased the prices of Fortnite’s in-game currency due to higher operational costs. This latest round of layoffs marks the second major restructuring by Epic Games in three years, following a previous reduction of approximately 830 jobs in 2023 to enhance profitability.

While the exact percentage of affected staff remains undisclosed, the gaming industry at large has witnessed similar restructuring efforts. Electronic Arts and Amazon have also undergone significant layoffs, with rising memory chip prices further complicating the economic landscape for gaming companies.
