European Union and India leaders have finally reached a significant trade agreement after nearly two decades of intermittent negotiations, driven by recent urgency following heavy tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the deal as “the mother of all deals,” highlighting its historic significance as India’s largest and most comprehensive trade pact, accounting for a third of global trade.
The free trade deal will substantially reduce tariffs on approximately 97% of European goods by value imported into India and is projected to double EU exports to India by 2032, creating a massive market of two billion people. The announcement of this landmark agreement coincided with India’s Republic Day celebrations, where European leaders were honored guests, underscoring the strategic importance of the deal.
This agreement will dismantle India’s longstanding trade barriers, offering access to its protected domestic market for various European products, including cars. Tariffs on European car imports, such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Mercedes-Benz, will be slashed to 10% from current rates as high as 110% on some vehicles. Conversely, India will benefit from reduced duties on European goods like wine, chocolates, and olive oil. The deal also promises enhanced access for Indian skilled professionals to work in Europe, a significant boost for the labor force.
Negotiations were expedited due to the tumultuous trade policies of the Trump administration, which escalated talks between the EU and India. The deal signifies a shift towards cooperation amid escalating global challenges, reducing strategic dependencies in a time where trade is increasingly weaponized.
The formal signing of the agreement is expected later this year, with potential implementation by early 2027, following thorough legal scrutiny. This comprehensive deal excludes contentious issues like increased access to India’s agricultural and dairy sectors, indicating a mutual eagerness to swiftly secure the agreement. Modi’s government faced pressure to deliver positive trade outcomes domestically, especially after stalled talks with the U.S. last fall, signaling India’s intent to diversify trade relations and reduce dependency on any single dominant economy.
