Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the site at Accurate Energetic Systems, a supplier and researcher of explosives for the military, as completely obliterated. He expressed the heart-wrenching nature of the incident, especially as he personally knew three families affected by the tragedy.
While multiple fatalities have been confirmed, the exact number was not disclosed by Davis. Initially, 19 individuals were reported missing, but one person believed to be on-site was later found safe at home.
The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m. local time, causing significant destruction visible from aerial footage showing the smoldering aftermath at the company’s hilltop location. Debris was strewn over a wide area, with the explosion felt by people more than 24 kilometers away.
Accurate Energetic Systems, situated in the Bucksnort area around 97 kilometers southwest of Nashville, operates an eight-building facility for processing explosives and ammunition. The total workforce and the number of individuals present during the blast remain unknown.
Investigators are actively working to determine the cause of the explosion, which initially prevented emergency crews from accessing the plant due to ongoing detonations. By Friday afternoon, the situation was deemed secure, with no further risk of explosions reported.
The company, in a statement on LinkedIn, extended condolences to the affected families and community, emphasizing gratitude for the tireless efforts of first responders in challenging circumstances.
Accurate Energetic Systems has a history of military contracts primarily with the U.S. army and navy, supplying various munitions and explosives, including bulk explosives and breaching charges like C-4. The explosion’s shockwaves were felt in nearby Lobelville, prompting residents to recount the terrifying experience.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee urged prayers for the impacted families, monitoring the situation closely. State Representative Jody Barrett expressed concerns over the potential economic repercussions, noting the plant’s significance as a major employer in the region.
