Canadian travelers heading to the United States in the coming days should be aware of potential flight disruptions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plans to reduce air traffic by 10% at 40 of the busiest U.S. airports, impacting major hubs like New York City and Chicago. This reduction is due to the prolonged U.S. government shutdown, which has entered its 37th day.

The FAA announced that flight cuts will begin at 4% on Friday and gradually increase to 10% by November 14, affecting commercial airlines from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. The decision aims to ensure travel safety as unpaid air traffic controllers struggle amid the shutdown.

Airports affected include key locations such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, along with other major hubs across the country like Atlanta, Denver, and Dallas. Airlines are currently evaluating the impact of these cuts, which could lead to approximately 1,800 fewer flights and 268,000 fewer seats available.

Canadian airlines operating cross-border flights could also face challenges. Air Canada has reported delays for customers connecting to U.S. domestic flights with its partner, United Airlines. The situation has prompted airlines to offer flexibility to affected passengers, allowing changes or deferrals without fees.

Despite the disruptions, WestJet stated that its operations remain unaffected. Transport Canada advises travelers departing from Canadian airports to verify their flight statuses in advance.

Aviation expert John Gradek from McGill University warns that delays at U.S. airports may cause ripple effects in Canada’s air travel system. He highlights airspace concerns, noting that flights over U.S. territory are crucial for Canadian routes, potentially impacting travel plans if American air traffic controllers are absent.

The FAA’s flight reductions will affect a comprehensive list of U.S. airports, including major facilities like John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Denver International Airport. Travelers are advised to stay informed as the situation evolves.
