In the 2025 Calgary mayoral election, Jeromy Farkas narrowly defeated Sonya Sharp by less than one percent, as per unofficial results. Sharp has indicated her intention to request a recount following the close race. Farkas secured 91,068 votes, edging out Sharp who received 90,484 votes. The difference between the two candidates is less than 600 votes. According to the city’s returning officer, Kate Martin, a recount can be requested if the results are within half a percentage point of the total ballots cast at individual polling stations.

The city-wide preliminary results show that Farkas leads Sharp by approximately 0.17% of the total 348,626 ballots cast. Sharp stated that she plans to seek a recount under the applicable legislation. She emphasized that the request is not a critique of the election workers’ efforts but a precautionary measure to ensure the accuracy of the count given the extremely close margin.

If the results hold, Farkas will become Calgary’s 38th mayor and the first to unseat an incumbent mayor since 1980. Farkas expressed gratitude to Jyoti Gondek for her service as mayor, highlighting his admiration for her contributions to the city. He pledged to collaborate with individuals across the political spectrum to address key issues such as safety and affordability.

The election saw a decrease in voter turnout and witnessed Farkas garnering fewer votes compared to the 2021 election where he was the runner-up. In this election, Farkas aimed to challenge what he perceived as a disconnected council on critical matters like jobs, housing, and safety. The election also marked the first time party affiliations were allowed on the ballot at the local level.

Farkas, known for his prior council service and nonprofit endeavors, emphasized the importance of unity and results-driven governance in his new role as mayor. His journey, including a transformative hike and leadership evolution, has been a focal point of discussion among fellow candidates.

Gondek, the incumbent mayor who conceded the race, expressed pride in her accomplishments and gratitude for the opportunity to serve Calgary. Other candidates, including Davison and Thiessen, extended their appreciation to supporters and emphasized the importance of citizen-focused governance.

The final composition of the council and trustee positions is expected to be revealed later on Tuesday as the manual counting process continues. The election outcome and the diverse perspectives of the incoming council members are anticipated to shape Calgary’s future direction.
