A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a school bus driver lost their life in a crash on Highway 401 in London, Ontario. The crash resulted in four children sustaining minor injuries and being taken to the hospital. The collision, which involved a single vehicle, caused the closure of the westbound lanes of the highway for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation.
According to Ontario Provincial Police Constable Steven Duguay, the accident took place around 9:40 a.m. The bus veered off the highway, overturned, and came to a stop. Of the 42 passengers on board, four children were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Sadly, the school bus driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the cause of the driver’s death is still under investigation.
The driver, identified as a 52-year-old man from the Waterloo region, has not been publicly named by the police. Following the crash, a command center was set up at the East Lions Community Centre in southeast London for families to reunite with their children.
The school bus was carrying Grade 9 students from the Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School on a trip to Point Pelee National Park. Witnesses described chaotic moments during and after the crash, with some speculating that the driver may have experienced a medical emergency. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, stating it is too early to determine why the bus left the road.
As investigations continue, the Waterloo Region District School Board is offering support to the students and families affected by the incident, emphasizing the importance of school bus safety in transporting students to educational experiences. Plans are underway to return the students safely and provide necessary assistance during this challenging time.
