The federal government has announced funding exceeding $5.4 million for five projects led by reproductive and sexual health organizations. Health Canada revealed that these initiatives are geared towards enhancing access to sexual and reproductive health services for women and underserved communities nationwide.
The funding will be channeled through Health Canada’s sexual and reproductive health fund, which aims to bolster community-based organizations striving to improve access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health services for marginalized communities.
During a recent news conference in Montreal, Health Minister Marjorie Michel, accompanied by parliamentary secretary Marie-Gabrielle Ménard, Culture Minister Marc Miller, and MP Steven Guilbeault, disclosed the organizations receiving funding:
– The Canadian Association of Midwives will receive $728,305.
– Fertility Matters Canada is allocated $860,078.
– Abortion Care Canada will benefit from $949,038.
– Endometriosis Network Canada has been granted $966,884.
– The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada will receive $1.93 million.
Minister Michel emphasized that challenges such as geographical barriers, stigma, language obstacles, and lack of information hinder access to quality care. She stressed that investing in women’s health equates to investing in Canada’s prosperity, underscoring the importance of equity and dignity in healthcare.
The funding for these organizations will support various projects, including developing resources for abortion and postpartum services, enhancing access to fertility care, strengthening region-specific knowledge for improved abortion care access, supporting individuals facing barriers to care, and creating resources for menopause specialized care.
These projects are all aimed at addressing barriers that impede women’s access to health services. The sexual and reproductive health care fund actively supports other organizations and projects that uplift women’s access to reproductive health care and resources across Canada.
