Arttu Valola’s goal at 2:11 of overtime propelled Finland to a 4-3 victory over the two-time defending champion United States in the world junior hockey quarterfinals in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Finnish team sought revenge after losing to the Americans in overtime in last year’s final in Ottawa.
Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju credited the U.S. team’s skill and coaching but expressed satisfaction with their hard-earned victory. Finland will now face Sweden in the semifinals while Canada will take on the Czech Republic. Sweden defeated Latvia 6-3, Canada dominated Slovakia with a 7-1 win, and the Czech Republic overcame Switzerland 6-2.
Michigan State’s Lee Ryker equalized for the United States with 1:33 remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Lee Tuuva and Joona Saarelainen scored crucial goals in the third period to secure the victory for Finland. Boston University’s Cole Hutson, who returned from injury, contributed a goal and an assist for the U.S. team.
Despite their strong performance, the U.S. team suffered back-to-back losses, including a defeat to Sweden in the group finale. Head coach Bob Motzko praised his team’s effort and acknowledged Finland’s strong performance.
In other games, Anton Frondell scored twice for Sweden, helping them defeat Latvia. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic secured a 6-2 victory over Switzerland with goals from various players.
Germany emerged victorious in the relegation game against Denmark, winning 8-4 to secure their place in the main event for the next year, while Denmark was relegated to Division I-A.
