He emphasized his strong stance against this move, highlighting its negative impacts on Ontario, Canada, and U.S. relations.
Canada imposed a 100% tariff on EVs in alignment with former U.S. President Joe Biden’s policies to safeguard the domestic automobile industry, sparking trade tensions with China. In response, China imposed tariffs on Canadian commodities like canola, seafood, and pork. Pressure has mounted on Ottawa to lift these duties to alleviate the burden on Canadian farmers and producers, especially from Prairie premiers.
Mark Carney’s visit to China marks the first prime ministerial visit since 2017, aiming to enhance engagement on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is accompanying Carney to address Chinese tariffs on canola during the trip.
Ford acknowledged Moe’s efforts to protect Saskatchewan’s interests but emphasized his role in safeguarding Ontario’s auto industry. He noted a potential shift in stance if a Chinese manufacturer invested in Ontario and supported the local economy. Flavio Volpe, President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of Chinese investments benefiting Canadian workers and industries.
Amid evolving trade dynamics, Volpe urged caution in recalibrating Canada’s relationship with China post-Trump era. He emphasized the need for open-minded negotiations while maintaining awareness of past truths. Last year, China’s ambassador to Canada hinted at the interest of electric vehicle giant BYD in investing in Canada, citing challenges and restrictions hindering their plans. BYD’s presence in Canada was envisioned to offer high-quality and affordable electric vehicles to Canadians.
