A day prior to Russian President Vladimir Putin welcoming members of the latest “peace” delegation from U.S. President Donald Trump at the Kremlin, Ukraine’s former foreign minister shared his analysis on the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in his country.
Dmytro Kuleba, who represented Ukraine internationally during Russia’s invasion in February 2022, offered insights based on his extensive experience within Ukraine’s government and exposure to international geopolitical realities.
Speaking at a conference on Dec. 1, Kuleba characterized Ukraine’s current situation as a blend of tactical setbacks and strategic gains. He acknowledged the loss of approximately 19% of Ukrainian territory to Russia and the significant loss of Ukrainian lives. However, he emphasized that Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Putin’s attempts to dismantle the nation signifies a strategic victory.
Despite recent peace negotiations, Putin’s uncompromising stance remains unchanged. Russian demands include full control over the Donbas region, restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities, and political requisites such as Zelenskyy’s resignation to facilitate new elections.
While casualties continue to mount on both sides, Putin remains steadfast in his pursuit of what he perceives as Russia’s historical entitlement to Ukrainian territories. Despite international pressures and economic incentives, Putin’s commitment to his vision of a reconstructed “Russian world” remains unwavering.
As the conflict persists, the internal dynamics within Ukraine add complexity to the situation. While polls indicate a desire for peace among Ukrainians, the prospect of Zelenskyy accepting Putin’s terms is met with skepticism by analysts in Ukraine.
Amidst the escalating tensions, the role of international actors, particularly Trump, is crucial in shaping the path forward. With the potential to supply Ukraine with defensive capabilities and exert economic pressure on Russia, Trump’s decisions may hold the key to breaking the current deadlock in negotiations.
As the conflict continues to unfold, the future remains uncertain, with the fate of Ukraine and the region hanging in the balance.
