In the heart of the North Atlantic lies Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a French archipelago exuding a unique blend of rugged beauty and European allure, reminiscent of a miniature France. Despite its small size of just 242 square kilometers, the islands boast rich character and a fascinating history. Visitors can meander through cobblestone streets where horses roam freely and discover remnants of its notorious rum-running past.

For Josephine Jobert, a French actress, and Allan Hawco from Newfoundland, filming the CBC’s new drama series “Saint-Pierre” on the island was an eye-opening experience. They shared their insights on living there during the show’s production, portraying characters forced to collaborate to solve distinctive crimes. The duo uncovered hidden treasures, from delectable French cuisine to a retro disco offering nights of endless dancing.

Josephine Jobert expressed her initial unfamiliarity with the location but found it essential to explore another facet of her homeland. The ambiance felt somewhat like home, with French patisseries, wine, and cheese, yet uniquely isolated and shielded from the outside world. Allan Hawco highlighted the historical bond between Newfoundland and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, emphasizing their mutual reliance for essential services and goods.

During their off-set moments, the duo indulged in shopping, captivated by the local offerings. They savored exquisite dining experiences, including a throwback disco night reminiscent of the ’80s. Hawco marveled at the island’s authenticity, particularly the untouched disco ambiance, prompting creative discussions on revitalizing its charm. Jobert cherished the island’s free-spirited atmosphere, where horses freely roamed, and locals embraced an unapologetically direct and genuine demeanor.

Filming in Saint-Pierre transformed their perception of the island, deepening their affection for its uniqueness. Despite their diverse backgrounds, Jobert found similarities in the locals’ candid and straightforward demeanor, akin to French honesty. The experience left them enamored with Saint-Pierre, with Hawco acknowledging his newfound appreciation for the island’s allure.

The captivating allure of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon continues to resonate with the stars of “Saint-Pierre,” offering viewers a glimpse into the island’s charm. The series premiered on January 6, with new episodes available for streaming on CBC Gem every Monday at 9 a.m. ET and airing on CBC-TV at 9 p.m. ET (9:30 p.m. NT).
