Caitlyn Moony shared her journey of relocating to Vancouver in 2018, seeking a new beginning in a city known for its allure. Coming from Johannesburg, where work opportunities were limited and pay was meager, she anticipated a better life in the vibrant Canadian city, already home to her sister and her family. Moony had a history of moving around the globe, adapting to new environments with ease.
Initially captivated by Vancouver’s natural beauty, from the majestic mountains to the calming rain in Pacific Spirit Park, Moony soon discovered that her expectations did not align with reality. Struggling to establish professional connections and facing challenges due to lack of “Canadian experience,” she found herself in a demanding job with meager pay, residing in a cramped basement apartment.
As time passed, Moony’s initial enchantment with Vancouver faded, replaced by frustration and loneliness. She longed for the sense of community she had experienced in previous places she had lived. Feeling isolated and disconnected, she sought solace in London, a city she had lived in before, craving the bustling energy and diversity it offered.
However, during her time in London, Moony realized a gradual transformation within herself, a shift towards a calmer, more introspective mindset influenced by her time in Vancouver. Despite the allure of London’s vibrant atmosphere, she felt like a visitor, recognizing a newfound appreciation for the tranquility and self-discovery that Vancouver had facilitated.
Ultimately, Moony found herself drawn back to Vancouver, acknowledging its imperfections but yearning for the sense of belonging and growth she had discovered during her time there. As she returned to the city amidst a winter storm, she reflected on the evolving relationship she shared with Vancouver, embracing its unique charm and seeking a renewed connection.
