In a surprising development on Wednesday, the Gaza Health Ministry announced the reception of 54 unidentified bodies from Israel, along with 66 boxes containing the remains of Palestinians believed to have perished during the two-year conflict with Hamas. Health authorities in Gaza have initiated the process of identifying these remains.
Mu’in Al-Wahidi, who heads the special body for receiving bodies at Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed the acceptance of the unidentified bodies and remains late in the evening on Wednesday. Al-Wahidi stated that the hospital had received intact bodies of individuals and human remains transported in sealed boxes, which will undergo forensic examination the following day.
According to Al-Wahidi, there is a lack of information regarding the circumstances or locations of the deaths, as well as any means of identification for the individuals. He clarified that the transfer of remains to Gaza was not part of any truce agreement or a swap for Israeli hostages’ bodies.
Last week, Israeli authorities released the bodies of 15 unidentified Palestinians, marking the final exchange between Israel and Hamas as part of the initial phase of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan. This move followed the recovery of the remains of Ran Gvili, the last hostage held by Hamas for over 840 days following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
The transfer of 54 bodies from Israel to Gaza on Wednesday brings the total number of deceased individuals released by Israel since the ceasefire deal’s commencement on October 10, 2024, to 414. The return of the bodies of some Palestinians killed in the conflict was a key provision in the first stage of the ceasefire agreement inked the previous October.
Amani Al-Naouq, the spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Gaza, confirmed the ICRC’s facilitation of the transfer on Wednesday. Al-Naouq emphasized the challenging task ahead for forensic authorities in identifying these remains given significant resource limitations, highlighting the numerous families seeking closure about their missing loved ones.
On a separate note, amid another tragic day in Gaza with Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes claiming the lives of 24 Palestinians, including seven children and a paramedic, health officials reported. This violence represents the latest setback to the nearly four-month-old ceasefire in the region, triggered by militants firing at Israeli troops near the armistice line with Hamas. The Israeli military responded to the militant fire, terming it a breach of the ceasefire pact.
