In a world where misinformation is prevalent, geophysicist Philip Heron is dedicated to promoting critical thinking skills. Heron is the creator of Think Like a Scientist, a program initially launched in the U.K. and now introduced in Canada. This concise seven-week course, traditionally taught in schools, has also been successfully implemented in correctional facilities, surprising many.

The impact of the program has been profound for some participants. Dalton Harrison, who attended the inaugural prison session, is now pursuing a master’s degree in criminology. Reflecting on his experience, Harrison shared how a talk at Durham University, organized by Heron, transformed his outlook and motivated him to pursue academic endeavors.

Heron, who works at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus, designed Think Like a Scientist to introduce the scientific method to non-traditional science learners, including individuals with incarceration backgrounds. The program is structured to foster dialogue rather than follow a conventional classroom approach.

Covering diverse topics such as climate change, robotics, and space exploration, the course emphasizes the value of failure. Heron underscores the importance of embracing failure as an integral part of the scientific process, encouraging students to view setbacks as stepping stones toward success.

Drawing inspiration from Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, Heron incorporates lessons on managing mental health in challenging environments, likening the experiences of astronauts to those confined in prison. Former participants, like Phoenix Griffin, credit the program with instilling confidence and a new perspective, leading them to pursue higher education opportunities.

In essence, Think Like a Scientist is not just a program but a catalyst for transformation, offering incarcerated individuals a fresh outlook and opening doors to new possibilities through the power of science education.
