In Times Square, the arrival of a new year is often marked by the familiar tune of “Auld Lang Syne,” while in East Asia, especially during Lunar New Year celebrations, the song “Gong xi gong xi” serves as a similar iconic sound.

Unlike many festive tunes, “Gong xi gong xi” stands out with its minor key, a feature that gives the song a less jubilant tone. The origins of this Mandarin song trace back to songwriter Chen Gexin in the mid-1940s, a tumultuous period following the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War, a conflict that resulted in significant casualties.

Chen’s experiences during the war, including time spent writing anti-Japanese songs and later working under the Japanese government, influenced the somber undertones of “Gong xi gong xi.” The lyrics speak of congratulations and optimism, reflecting a reserved sense of joy and hope amidst post-war devastation and economic challenges in China.

The song’s association with Lunar New Year remains somewhat mysterious, with speculations suggesting its rise during televised New Year’s Gala events in the 1980s. Regardless of its timing, the song’s hopeful message and positive greetings align well with the spirit of Lunar New Year festivities.

According to Yvon Wang, a history professor at the University of Toronto, “Gong xi gong xi” resonates in today’s turbulent global landscape, offering a mix of hope and caution. In the midst of political unrest, environmental concerns, and social divides, the song serves as a reminder to embrace optimism despite acknowledging the challenges we face in striving for a better world.
