Renowned gospel singer and eight-time Grammy Award nominee Richard Smallwood has passed away at the age of 77. He succumbed to complications of kidney failure on Tuesday at a rehabilitation and nursing facility in Sandy Spring, Md., as confirmed by his spokesperson Bill Carpenter.

Smallwood battled health challenges for many years, finding solace and strength in his music, according to Carpenter. The deep dedication to music sustained him throughout his life, inspiring him to continue creating and performing to uplift others.

Smallwood’s impactful songs have been embraced by notable artists such as Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Destiny’s Child, and Boyz II Men. Houston famously showcased his music in the 1996 film “The Preacher’s Wife” by singing “I Love the Lord.” Chaka Khan, a celebrated singer and songwriter, expressed her admiration for Smallwood’s contributions to the world of gospel music, praising his talent and devotion.

Born on November 30, 1948, in Atlanta, Smallwood displayed musical talent early in life, starting to play the piano by ear at the age of five. Raised primarily in Washington, D.C., by his mother and stepfather, who was a pastor, he later pursued a music degree at Howard University. Smallwood’s musical journey continued as he founded the Richard Smallwood Singers and later formed Vision, a renowned choir that produced hits like “Total Praise.”

“Total Praise” became a cherished modern hymn, resonating across diverse audiences and worship settings. Even with health challenges in later years, Smallwood’s impact endured, with his music continuing to inspire and comfort many.

The legacy of Richard Smallwood, a true music pioneer, will be remembered through the notes he composed and the hearts he touched. As Chaka Khan eloquently puts it, “I am truly looking forward to singing with you in heaven.”
