In Waterloo, Shefaza Esmail, the Green party candidate, has announced her endorsement of incumbent Catherine Fife, who is running for the NDP in the same riding. Esmail shared her endorsement during a panel discussion on CBC K-W’s show, “The Morning Edition” hosted by Craig Norris.
The endorsement came as Esmail was discussing funding for universities and colleges and expressed concerns about potential vote splitting in the area. She urged voters inclined towards the Green movement to support Aislinn Clancy in Kitchener Centre but emphasized the importance of backing Fife in Waterloo to prevent the possibility of the PC government gaining ground due to vote division.
Esmail, who is running for the Green party for the second time, highlighted the need for strategic voting in the upcoming election. Fife has served as the MPP for the riding since 2012 after winning a by-election.
Waterloo residents will have a choice among eight candidates on the ballot, including representatives from various parties like New Blue, Electoral Reform Party, Ontario Party, Liberal, Libertarian, and Progressive Conservatives.
This election season has seen other instances of candidates endorsing opponents, such as Natasha Doyle-Merrick in the Toronto riding of Eglinton-Lawrence, who withdrew from the race to support the Liberals. Doyle-Merrick emphasized the importance of recognizing the two-party dynamics in the riding and the need to prioritize the interests of the constituents.
