The Memphis Grizzlies dismissed Taylor Jenkins, their most successful coach, on Friday due to the team’s recent struggles as they risk losing home-court advantage for the playoffs. Despite holding the fifth spot in the Western Conference standings, the Grizzlies opted to part ways with Jenkins.
Having coached the Grizzlies for six seasons, Jenkins was released just before a stretch of three home games in four days, starting with matchups against the Lakers, Boston, and Golden State. The decision came as Memphis faced a challenging schedule with most of their remaining games against playoff contenders.
Zach Kleiman, the Grizzlies’ president and general manager of basketball operations, described the move as a “difficult decision,” praising Jenkins for player development and overall success. Assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo was appointed as the interim coach, marking his first season coaching in the NBA.
Struggling against top teams this season was a significant factor in Jenkins’ dismissal. The Grizzlies had poor results against leading opponents, notably going winless in four games against Oklahoma City and posting a losing record against other top Western Conference teams.
Despite Jenkins’ milestone achievements with the Grizzlies, including the most wins in franchise history, the team’s inconsistent performance against elite teams ultimately led to his departure. The decision to part ways with Jenkins reflects a shift in leadership as Memphis aims to improve its competitiveness in the highly competitive Western Conference.
