ArcelorMittal Dofasco, the largest steel producer in Canada, is under scrutiny for delays in its green steel initiatives and exceeding Ontario’s air-quality standards, prompting Hamilton resident Jochen Bezner to demand accountability. Bezner, along with an unnamed resident, has urged the Ministry of the Environment, Climate, and Parks (MECP) to investigate Dofasco for allegedly emitting hazardous pollutants well beyond the province’s regulatory limits.
Although Bezner clarified that the goal is not to shut down the steelmaker but to ensure responsible practices, concerns persist due to the existing high concentration of cancer-causing pollutants in Hamilton, such as benzene and benzo[a]pyrene. Ecojustice, supported by a Hamilton lawyer, lodged the investigation request, citing the impact on the 82,000 residents living near Dofasco’s plant.
Previously operating under exemptions allowing higher pollutant emissions, Dofasco’s exemptions expired in June 2023 without renewal, leaving the company in a regulatory “grey zone,” according to Bezner. MECP had been developing a new industry standard that has yet to be finalized, further complicating the situation.
Ecojustice’s FOI request revealed that Dofasco’s 2023 emissions report documented excessive emissions of pollutants like benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, sulfur dioxide, and manganese compounds, breaching the Environmental Protection Act. While Dofasco has pledged to comply with regulations, it faces criticism for the lack of progress in its decarbonization project, which could significantly reduce air pollution.
MECP is expected to respond to the investigation request in the coming months, with spokesperson Gary Wheeler emphasizing the need for facilities exceeding air quality standards to take corrective action. Despite challenges like high U.S. tariffs impacting its operations, Dofasco’s commitment to decarbonization remains pivotal for its future. Bezner hopes that stringent regulations will prompt the company to accelerate its environmental efforts.
