Lululemon Athletica Inc. has appointed a new chief executive officer, Heidi O’Neill, a former executive at Nike, to lead the Vancouver-based athleisure retailer starting September 8. This move follows a period of criticism regarding the company’s management and performance.

O’Neill was selected for her track record of delivering innovative ideas at scale and her expertise in driving change and growth. Marti Morfitt, chair of Lululemon’s executive board, praised O’Neill as an inspiring leader and brand strategist with the ability to envision the future of a brand and execute on that vision.

The decision to bring O’Neill on board comes at a challenging time for Lululemon, facing fierce competition and pressure from shareholders, including the company’s founder, Chip Wilson, to revamp its board and address market challenges.

Wilson, though no longer actively involved in the company, advocated for new board members to tackle competition, declining share prices, and product stagnation. Following the announcement of former CEO Calvin McDonald’s departure in December, the company’s CFO and COO took over as interim co-CEOs until O’Neill assumes her role.

With experience in growing Nike’s athletic brand and serving on various boards, O’Neill’s appointment signals a strategic shift for Lululemon. She expressed excitement about the brand’s potential and her focus on enhancing product innovation and expanding the company’s global reach.

Although O’Neill was not among the executives recommended by Wilson, industry analysts view her as a safe and traditional choice to lead Lululemon through a period of necessary cultural transformation. Despite challenges in North America, analysts believe O’Neill’s leadership can reignite growth and innovation within the company.
