Rachel Homan extended her dominance in Canadian women’s curling on Sunday. Coming close to a year without losing to a Canadian opponent, Homan wrapped up a flawless week at the PointsBet Invitational by defeating Corryn Brown from Kamloops, B.C., with a score of 6-2 at Calgary’s WinSport Event Centre. Brown had opportunities to take the lead but missed crucial shots, leading to Homan’s victory.
Homan’s team, known as the “Homan Empire,” consisting of Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkies, last faced defeat against a Canadian team on October 6, 2024. Since then, they have achieved 27 consecutive wins against Canadian opponents. Homan expressed the team’s focus on continuous improvement as they head towards the Canadian Olympic trials.
In the men’s final, Matt Dunstone from Winnipeg emerged victorious over Brad Jacobs from Calgary with a score of 6-4. This win marked Dunstone’s first PointsBet Invitational title after finishing as a runner-up in the 2022 and 2023 finals. Looking ahead, Homan’s team remains determined to excel at the upcoming Canadian Olympic trials in Halifax.
Both men’s and women’s top teams in Canada will compete for the opportunity to represent the country at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Italy. Despite her team’s loss, Brown acknowledged the progress they made during the week and expressed satisfaction with their performance.
