The University of Saskatchewan Huskies secured a spot in the national championship game by defeating the Queen’s Golden Gaels 22-11 in the Mitchell Bowl held in Saskatoon on Saturday. The Huskies will now face off against the Montreal Carabins in the upcoming Vanier Cup in Regina.
During the game, Daniel Kubongo was recognized as the offensive player of the game for his remarkable 85-yard punt return touchdown in the second quarter, contributing to the Huskies’ 14-1 halftime lead. Kubongo paid tribute to quarterback Anton Amundrud by displaying the number 11 after scoring the touchdown.
Despite the emotional week following Amundrud’s cancer diagnosis, the Huskies rallied together with a strong performance. Head coach Scott Flory expressed deep affection for Amundrud and the team’s unity in facing challenges.
Both teams showcased solid defensive performances in the first half, with Kubongo’s punt return being the standout play. Queen’s made a comeback attempt in the third quarter, but the Huskies maintained control. Kicker Lukas Scott sealed the victory with crucial field goals in the final minutes.
Fifth-year linebacker Seth Hundeby was named the defensive player of the game for his impactful performance, including two sacks and a forced fumble. The Huskies will now focus on the Vanier Cup clash with the Montreal Carabins, following their impressive win over the St. Mary’s Huskies in the Uteck Bowl.
