An ICE agent in the U.S. fatally shot a Minneapolis driver on Wednesday during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in a major American city. Federal officials claimed it was self-defense, but the city’s mayor criticized the act as “reckless” and unnecessary.

The 37-year-old woman was shot in the head in a snowy residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, close to where George Floyd was killed in 2020. Witnesses recorded the incident, leading to a large crowd of protesters gathering at the scene. Hundreds attended a vigil in the evening, which later swelled to thousands.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good, was described as a poet, writer, wife, and mother from Colorado. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the incident as “domestic terrorism,” claiming the woman tried to run over ICE agents. However, Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the federal actions, accusing them of causing chaos and distrust.

President Donald Trump supported the ICE actions, while Governor Tim Walz stated that no further federal assistance was needed. The shooting, captured on video, showed the ICE agent firing at close range, leading to the woman’s death.

Protests erupted, prompting Walz to call in the Minnesota National Guard to be prepared for potential violence. The incident marked the fifth death linked to immigration crackdowns, creating tension in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged peaceful protests, emphasizing the need to avoid violent escalations. Investigations into the shooting are ongoing, with calls for the officer responsible to be prosecuted.

Similar to previous crackdowns in Los Angeles and Chicago, bystanders expressed anger at the federal agents, demanding ICE to leave Minnesota. Community groups prepared to monitor federal enforcement actions in response to the tragic incident.
