Rockin’ Rick, a familiar face outside the Rogers Centre during Toronto Blue Jays home games, has decided to retire from busking after a remarkable 36-year run. Known for his Blue Jays jersey and rhythmic drumming, Rick Donaldson has entertained fans since he started performing in 1989.

In a recent interview with CBC News, Donaldson expressed his nostalgia, saying, “I remember kids coming to games, who are now bringing their kids to games. It’s overwhelming sometimes.” Family reasons also influenced his decision, as he mentioned wanting to spend more time with his grandkids at games.

For many fans, Rick’s drum beats have been an integral part of the Blue Jays experience, akin to hotdogs and post-game traffic. Laurie Wulfand, a long-time fan, shared, “I’ve been a fan of Rick my whole life, I first saw him when I was 15. My son is 21 now and Rick has watched him grow up… we definitely teared up when we heard he was retiring.”

Michelle Beer, another Blue Jays enthusiast, described Donaldson as a “beloved staple” in the baseball community, suggesting that the city should consider honoring him with a statue or commemorative photo at the stadium.

Despite his current fame, Donaldson’s busking journey almost ended prematurely in the past. Recalling his early days outside the Skydome, he recounted an incident where he and saxophonist Dougie Richardson were initially asked to leave. However, a fortunate encounter with George Holm, the Jays’ ticketing manager at the time, allowed them to stay and continue performing for the fans.

Looking ahead, Blue Jays supporters can catch one final performance by Rick Donaldson at an upcoming home game, following the team’s recent victory over the Seattle Mariners. While his time outside the Rogers Centre may be ending, Donaldson assured fans that he will continue his professional drumming career, currently collaborating with acclaimed blues musician Jack de Keyzer.
