Hospitals in Gaza reported that Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of at least 30 Palestinians on Saturday, marking one of the highest death tolls since the ceasefire agreement was enforced in October. The strikes, which occurred a day after Israel accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire, targeted various locations in Gaza, including an apartment building in Gaza City and a tent camp in Khan Younis, according to hospital officials.
Among the casualties were two women and six children from different families. An airstrike also hit a police station in Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 individuals and injuring others, as confirmed by Dr. Mohamed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Hospital.
Israeli military stated that the strikes targeted Hamas and Islamic Jihad commanders and facilities in response to what they deemed a breach of the ceasefire mediated by the U.S. Hamas, controlling part of Gaza, accused Israel of violating the truce but did not specify if any of its members or sites were hit in the attacks on Saturday.
Images captured the aftermath of the strikes, showing severe damage to buildings and debris scattered in the streets of Gaza City. The tragic incident left families mourning the loss of their loved ones, raising concerns about the escalating death toll despite the ceasefire in place.
The strikes took place just before the scheduled opening of the Rafah crossing along the Gaza-Egypt border, a critical access point for Palestinians seeking medical treatment outside Gaza, where much of the healthcare infrastructure has been destroyed. The reopening of Rafah crossing signifies a significant step in the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which includes reopening borders, demilitarizing the region, and establishing a new governing body for reconstruction efforts.
Since the ceasefire came into effect in October following years of conflict, Gaza health officials reported that over 500 people, mostly civilians, have been killed by Israeli fire. Palestinian militants have also been involved in deadly confrontations, resulting in casualties on both sides.
The ongoing tensions and violations of the ceasefire pose challenges to the peace process as international efforts push for further steps outlined in the agreement to bring an end to the prolonged conflict. Complex issues, such as Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, remain contentious points as the parties navigate the path towards a lasting resolution.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance against Palestinian statehood, despite growing global support for it, adds another layer of complexity to the peace negotiations. The conflicting positions and actions of both sides underscore the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the obstacles to achieving a lasting peace in the region.
