Israel’s president has urged an end to the rising incidents of violence from settlers after a severe attack by Jewish settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank. Isaac Herzog’s remarks provided a significant voice against the settler violence, which had seen limited criticism from top Israeli figures. While Herzog’s role is mainly symbolic, it aims to guide the country morally and foster unity.
Herzog condemned the actions of a small group of perpetrators, stating that their behavior has crossed a critical threshold. He emphasized the need for all state authorities to take decisive action to eliminate this behavior. The recent attack involved masked Israeli settlers assaulting Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf villages, resulting in property damage and clashes with Israeli soldiers.
Israeli army’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, echoed Herzog’s sentiments, emphasizing the military’s zero-tolerance stance towards criminal actions that tarnish the law-abiding public. He stressed the military’s commitment to preventing violent acts by settlers, which he deemed contrary to Israeli values and a distraction from their core mission.
The military’s Central Command chief, Maj.-Gen. Avi Bluth, highlighted the significant resources required to address the actions of an anarchist fringe, resources that could otherwise be utilized for enhancing security and counterterrorism operations. Following the attacks, four Israelis were arrested, and four Palestinians were injured, as confirmed by the authorities.
The surge in settler violence in the West Bank, particularly targeting young settlers, has escalated in recent years, coinciding with the conflict in Gaza. The United Nations reported a record number of attacks on Palestinians by Israeli settlers in October, with over 260 incidents recorded. Palestinians and human rights advocates have criticized the Israeli army and police for their alleged failure to curb settler attacks.
The violence has raised concerns about the safety and security of Palestinians in the region, with residents expressing fear and a desire to live without the constant threat of settler violence. The attacks have targeted various properties, including a dairy factory, leading to calls for sanctions against groups supporting such activities.
International bodies, including the United Nations, and many countries, including Canada, consider settlements illegal under international law. Canada has condemned extremist settler violence and opposes any discussions of annexation of Palestinian territories. The Canadian government has imposed sanctions on key figures linked to settler violence, emphasizing the need to address such actions against civilians.
Residents affected by the violence have voiced their concerns about the impact on their daily lives and the need for a safe environment free from fear. The recent attacks have highlighted the organized nature of the violence, with individuals carrying out planned actions to cause harm and destruction.
