The Jacques-Cartier Bridge in Montreal has resumed operation with two lanes open in each direction following a temporary closure due to a fire incident. The closure lasted from early morning until midday, causing significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour on the South Shore.

While most lanes have reopened, the exit lane towards De Lorimier Avenue south remains closed, along with the multipurpose path and sidewalk in both directions. Concerns arose about a nearby vacant industrial building at 1600 De Lorimier Ave., which led to its demolition to prevent any potential hazards to the bridge.

Approximately 120 firefighters worked to control the four-alarm fire that started on the first floor late Tuesday night and was contained by midday Wednesday. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and it is unclear if anyone was inside the building at the time.

The building, owned by the Bertone Development Corporation, has historical significance and was slated for redevelopment to enhance the city’s entrance. Plans for the site included integrating the existing building into a new project. However, development activities have been paused pending further assessments.

Héritage Montréal noted ongoing discussions between the Ville-Marie borough and developers to preserve the heritage building within the Quartier des lumières neighborhood. The federal government had previously invested in the project through its Apartment Construction Loan Program.

The vacant building, constructed in 1910, has a rich history, including past ownership by notable businesses like Procter and Gamble and Familex. It is recognized for its unique design that influenced the layout of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge.

Vacant buildings in Montreal have been susceptible to fires in recent years, with data showing a significant number of serious fires occurring in such properties. Efforts to address this issue, including mandatory registration of vacant buildings by property owners, have been implemented but are still being enforced.

The closure of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge impacted traffic beyond Montreal, affecting services like the Sorel-Tracy ferry due to increased congestion from drivers seeking alternate routes across the St. Lawrence River.
