Jake Paul Enters Top 100 Cruiserweight Rankings

One must acknowledge Jake Paul’s accomplishments thus far. Transitioning from a YouTuber with an interest in sports to a competent professional athlete is no small feat, as evidenced by the scarcity of individuals who achieve such a transformation.

While he may not secure a major world title or conquer a top-tier boxer near his prime, Paul has managed to break into the top 100 in Boxrec’s cruiserweight rankings, a noteworthy achievement in itself.

As widely known among sports enthusiasts with internet access, Paul is scheduled to face former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Miami next Friday, headlining a fight card to be streamed on Netflix. Paul deserves credit for embracing the challenge rather than opting for a mismatch disguised as a credible boxing showdown.

In preparation for the most demanding fight of his career, Paul brought in a notable roster of heavyweight contenders to his training facility in Puerto Rico to spar with.

Among them was Frank Sanchez, also known as The Cuban Flash.

Jarrett Anderson, previously hailed as America’s upcoming heavyweight sensation.

Martin Bakole, a formidable 280-pound boxer who overpowered Anderson in their 2024 encounter. Kudos to Paul for choosing to experience firsthand what it’s like to spar with a heavyweight possessing superior attributes in every aspect, including experience.

Joshua’s Peak in the Late 2010s

Admittedly, Joshua reached his prime in the late 2010s and suffered a knockout defeat by Daniel Dubois in his most recent bout 15 months ago. Nonetheless, he remains a formidable opponent compared to Paul’s typical rivals, considering Mike Tyson was at his prime during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Joshua poses a significant challenge that cannot be underestimated.

For those seeking a competitive boxing match on Dec 19, the focus should shift to the co-feature, featuring super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner against challenger Leila Beaudoin of Temiscouata, Que.

Beyond the Netflix spectacle surrounding the main event, considerable gaps exist in experience, ring intelligence, and raw punching ability. These are deficiencies that Paul is unlikely to bridge in a single training camp, despite the quality of his sparring partners. Therefore, if this high-stakes showdown deteriorates into a one-sided domination before a massive online audience, it should not come as a surprise. It is imperative to heed the signs presented by the facts.

Replacing Paul with any of his Boxrec counterparts renders the fight irrelevant for analysis. Criticism would likely be directed at Joshua’s choice of opponent, as a heavyweight contender eyeing a final title bid should not engage a third-rate cruiserweight, even as a comeback fight following a 15-month hiatus.

However, given that the cruiserweight in question is Jake Paul, backed by Netflix and their substantial resources, the matchup makes sense for Joshua, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist. Paul’s fame and influence in the social media era may create a false belief in his chances, as reputation often overshadows actual skill.

Previous fights against Joshua indicate potential strategies for victory. Andy Ruiz utilized exceptional hand speed in their 2019 encounter. Oleksandr Usyk relied on superior footwork and ring generalship, while Daniel Dubois showcased pure power. Yet, Paul does not excel in these attributes compared to top-10 boxers. In his recent bout, he outlasted Julio Cesar Chavez, who peaked over a decade ago in a different weight class, struggling in the latter rounds when Chavez adjusted tactically.

Joshua is unlikely to wait until Round 6 to unleash his assault, and if spectators fail to distinguish between “serviceable” and “world-class,” the truth may unfold next Friday.

The opponent selection for this fight contradicts Paul’s usual criteria, raising questions about how he ended up facing a former champion with knockout power in both hands.
