“Juno Awards to Introduce Latin Music Category in 2026”

Organizers of the Juno Awards, Canada’s premier music awards show, have announced plans to introduce a Latin music recording category at the 2026 ceremony. This new addition aims to acknowledge Canadian musicians who have released music in various Latin American languages and genres during the qualifying year.

The Junos’ decision to incorporate the Latin music category is part of their ongoing efforts to diversify recognition for Canadian artists and reflect the changing landscape of the country’s music scene. In recent years, the Junos have expanded their categories to include South Asian music and split the Indigenous category into two segments to honor both contemporary and traditional Indigenous artists.

Additionally, adjustments have been made to the rap categories in response to calls for increased clarity on the involvement of Canadian MCs. The updated regulations specify that in the rap single and rap album or EP categories, a minimum of 50% of the vocals must be performed by Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

The 2026 Juno Awards are scheduled to be held in Hamilton, with the main event broadcast from Hamilton Arena, formerly known as FirstOntario Centre, which is undergoing a $290 million renovation. The Juno week is slated to take place from Thursday, March 26, to Sunday, March 29, 2026.

During the 55th Annual Juno Awards, hosted by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), the culmination of the event will celebrate the achievements of Canadian musicians. Allan Reid, president and CEO of CARAS, expressed excitement about Hamilton’s vibrant music scene and cultural heritage, highlighting the city’s suitability as the awards’ host location.

Hamilton’s municipal contribution to the event is set at $500,000 from a reserve dedicated to conventions, sports, and events, with an additional $300,000 pledged by the Hamilton Tourism Development Corporation. The city last hosted the Juno Awards in 2015.
