Menihek High School in Labrador City is collaborating with a police inquiry regarding students who are suspected of utilizing generative artificial intelligence to produce and distribute intimate images, according to the Department of Education as confirmed by CBC News. The department emphasizes that all reports of physical, mental, or cyber violence are treated seriously and investigated thoroughly. It acknowledges the allegations of students utilizing generative AI for such purposes and asserts that appropriate measures will be taken pending the investigation’s outcome.
Generative AI technology has a wide range of applications, including editing text, creating audio clips, and producing manipulated or synthetic images. Although the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary did not confirm the investigation at the school, it did acknowledge receiving reports and anticipates a rise in reports related to sexually altered photos within its jurisdiction. Investigations involving individuals aged 12 to 17 are conducted in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, with potential charges encompassing the creation, possession, access, and distribution of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.
The situation at Menihek High is not an isolated incident in Labrador West. The RCMP’s Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit has encountered AI-generated images and videos during its operations. The Department of Education is also aware of similar incidents involving school-aged individuals in Labrador and the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland. As these matters may still be under police investigation, the department refrains from disclosing further details.
Generative AI technology is prevalent on social media platforms, yet not everyone comprehends its functioning, noted Jonathan Anderson, a computer engineering professor at Memorial University. Anderson highlighted the misuse of this technology in generating inappropriate content, emphasizing the need for companies to implement safeguards to mitigate such misuse. However, he acknowledged the challenges in completely preventing such activities. The responsibility also lies with individuals developing software to address the ethical implications of their products.
Child psychologist Janine Hubbard underscores the importance of parental involvement in educating children about media literacy and critical consumption of information. Hubbard emphasized the necessity of developing skills to discern the accuracy and appropriateness of content generated through AI technology. She advised parents to discuss the social implications of altered images with their children and guide them through navigating potential violations. In cases of illegal image alterations, Hubbard suggested addressing the issue promptly with the school and law enforcement to support affected youth.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged by the RNC to engage in conversations with their children about responsible technology usage, consent, and the repercussions of online behavior. The evolving landscape of AI technology necessitates a proactive approach to digital literacy and ethical considerations to safeguard against misuse and exploitation.
