A man from Winnipeg passed away following a medical emergency while participating in a boxing match at a charity event, according to his boxing club. The United Boxing Club in Winnipeg confirmed the death of 54-year-old Robert Boyko during the Corporate Challenge segment of the Melee Gala X fundraising event on Saturday night. Boyko had started boxing in the winter of 2024 and had a positive impact on his life in a short period.

The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Boyko, who had been an inspiration to fellow members. They have extended support to Boyko’s family and are collaborating with Boxing Canada to offer counseling services. The club emphasized that all safety protocols, including medical examinations during registration and on the competition day, were followed diligently.

Boyko’s sister mentioned that despite the family’s devastation, they find comfort in knowing that he spent his final moments engaged in something that brought him immense joy recently. At 54, Boyko was the oldest participant in the Corporate Challenge of the Melee Gala X.

Christopher Lindsay, the executive director of Boxing Canada, stated that there would be a comprehensive review of the incident, considering it an unusual occurrence. He highlighted the thorough health checks conducted on all competitors before the event and the immediate medical attention provided to Boyko by the ringside doctor.

Emergency services responded to the medical emergency at the event venue on Regent Avenue West, with one individual transported to the hospital in critical condition. In a social media post, Boyko expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the charity event, emphasizing the positive impact boxing had on his health and confidence. He also shared his journey of overcoming personal challenges and trauma, encouraging others to persevere and make every moment count.
