The individual who was found guilty of attempting to assassinate the U.S. President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course in 2024 has been sentenced to life in prison. A federal prosecutor emphasized the gravity of the crime, labeling it as unacceptable both in the U.S. and globally.

Ryan Routh’s sentencing took place in a Fort Pierce courtroom presided over by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon. The courtroom had experienced turmoil in September when Routh, immediately after being convicted by jurors, attempted self-harm.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Shipley emphasized that taking matters into one’s own hands to eliminate political candidates undermines American democracy. Routh’s defense attorney, Martin L. Roth, argued that despite his troubled past, Routh refrained from carrying out the assassination.

Judge Cannon highlighted Routh’s extensive arrest record, prompting Roth’s acknowledgment of Routh’s complexity while emphasizing his fundamental decency.

Routh proceeded to deliver a lengthy, disjointed statement. Judge Cannon intervened, deeming his words irrelevant and allowing him a brief additional time to speak.

Routh claimed to have led a virtuous life, a statement swiftly halted by the judge who condemned his deliberate and malevolent assassination plot. Routh was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, in addition to seven years for a gun-related charge, with concurrent sentences for other offenses.
