A frantic manhunt for the perpetrator of the recent mass shooting at Brown University concluded at a storage facility in New Hampshire, where authorities found the suspect deceased. The individual, identified as Claudio Neves Valente, was a former Brown student and Portuguese national. Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez disclosed that Valente was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation suggests that Valente is linked to both the Brown University shooting and the murder of MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro.

The tragic incident at Brown University resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others during a lecture hall shooting. The focus of the investigation shifted when authorities established a potential connection between the Brown attack and the fatal shooting of the MIT professor. Valente had been enrolled at Brown from 2000 to 2001 but currently had no ties to the university. Both Valente and Loureiro had attended the same academic program in Portugal between 1995 and 2000.

Valente, who had a student visa at Brown and later obtained legal permanent residence in 2017, resided in Miami. Following the revelation of his identity, President Donald Trump suspended the green card lottery program that facilitated Valente’s stay in the U.S. The FBI stated that there were no known links between the two shootings.

A custodian at Brown University played a crucial role in identifying Valente, leading to his discovery. The custodian’s suspicions, shared on social media platform Reddit, eventually led to the suspect. The tip provided by the custodian about a Nissan sedan with Florida plates was instrumental in tracking Valente’s movements through surveillance cameras.

Despite these developments, many questions remain unanswered regarding the motive behind the tragic events. Investigators are still trying to understand the reasons behind the attacks and the selection of targets. The community in Providence expressed frustration over the assailant’s escape and the lack of clear surveillance footage capturing the perpetrator’s actions. Though Brown University has numerous cameras on campus, the older section where the incident occurred had limited camera coverage, possibly aiding the shooter’s movements undetected.
