Mitch Marner faced a hostile reception from Toronto Maple Leafs’ fans in Las Vegas last week. The Vegas Golden Knights forward might want to consider earplugs for his return to Toronto this Friday at 7 p.m. ET. Marner, who grew up cheering for the Maple Leafs before being drafted fourth overall in 2015, will be playing against his former team for the first time since leaving in the summer.
Maple Leafs player Scott Laughton acknowledged Marner’s impact on the city, praising his contributions to the team. The anticipation is high for Marner’s return to Scotiabank Arena, with expectations of a loud reception from fans. Despite his departure, Marner’s legacy has not been forgotten by his former teammates and coaches.
Marner’s departure from the Maple Leafs was marked by controversy as he was traded to the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent. The trade also involved the acquisition of Nicolas Roy by Toronto. Marner’s successful tenure with the Maple Leafs included a career-high 102 points in the 2024-25 season, but he faced criticism for the team’s playoff performances.
Maple Leafs defenseman Brandon Carlo expressed excitement about facing Marner on the ice and encouraged embracing the challenge. Marner’s statistics with the Maple Leafs were impressive, with 741 points in 657 regular-season games. Despite the mixed emotions surrounding Marner’s return, there is hope for a warm welcome from the Toronto fans, acknowledging his positive impact both on and off the ice.
