Chinese-language newspaper Ming Pao Daily News, with branches in Richmond, B.C., and Toronto, Ont., is closing its Canadian operations due to financial reasons. In a letter to the B.C. Labour Ministry, Ming Pao Newspapers (Canada) confirmed the closure and termination of 60 employees, effective January 31st. The final editions in Vancouver and Toronto will be published on January 16th, with the newsrooms and offices shutting down on January 31st. The decision to close was made by the head office in Hong Kong, where Ming Pao originated in 1959 and has received various accolades. B.C. MLA Teresa Wat, a former Ming Pao assignment editor, expressed sadness over the closure, highlighting the newspaper’s importance as a resource for Chinese immigrants. Former reporter Austin Feng hopes other media outlets will step in to serve the needs of Ming Pao’s readers. Despite efforts to seek government support, including a petition for subsidies in 2024, the newspaper did not receive funding. Ming Pao’s closure follows the discontinuation of Sing Tao’s print editions in 2022, marking a significant shift in the landscape of Chinese-language media in Canada.
